Me and my
Landcruiser GXL a happy marriage! |
| I've been
keen on four wheel driving since I bought my first Toyota
Tercel when I started the business in 1985. That car was a toy 4WD but
nevertheless it became a great family car which could still be used for
business. As a matter of fact, we still own three Tercels in the business
and all are still going strong thanks to my friend Jeff at Cosgrove
Spares in Greenacre (Ph 2 9709 6477). The Tercel was good for muddy
building sites and getting the surveying gear into remote locations. It
was also good for pushing into otherwise inaccessable camping sites and
many great weekends were had along the Macquarie River at Bathurst.
By 1988 I'd realised that the Tercel just wasn't the car to get through every time! So .... into my first petrol GXL with the old Cobb & Co. coach style suspension. I'll say one thing for that car ... I never got one speeding fine! And on top of that, my wife refused to travel with me because of the uncomfortable ride. By 1990 I was towing a 2 tonne Fraser 737 bridgdeck cruiser and the poor old petrol engine was working hard. HAIL THE ALMIGHTY TURBO DIESEL! The 1990 GXL turbocharged diesel gave me 370nm of torque and what a breathe of fresh air when it came to towing the boat on the open road. (That reminds me ... the NRMA have been a great support over the years ... well done!) These days it's still a GXL Turbo Diesel. Winch, Bull Bar, double battery, fridge, custom roof rack, CD player all make it a comfortable vehicle. But I must say I'm a bit peeved with the price of diesel now compared to petrol. I can't comprehend the logic of a less refined product (diesel) costing substantially more than a highly refined product (petrol). Come on oil companies lets be fair! Anyway, many fine weekends have been spent 4WDriving and camping in places such as Barrington Tops, Hill End, Wombeyan Caves and Kangaroo Valley.
Fraser Island was conquered in 1993 and beach 4WDriving (licenced) is now a regular event. Keep up the fight against radical fourwheelers (who needs 'em) and narrow minded greenies who advocate closing all 4WD access to our national parks!!It's our land too!!! Happy 4 Wheeling ......... |
